Winds of Change Series #1
What happens when the boy she loved to hate becomes the man she hates to love?
The 1920’s are drawing to a close, and feisty Katie O’Connor is the epitome of the new woman – smart and sassy with goals for her future that include the perfect husband and a challenging career in law.
Her boyfriend Jack fits all of her criteria for a husband – good-looking, well-connected, wealthy, and eating out of her hand. But when she is forced to spend the summer of 1929 with Luke McGee, the bane of her childhood existence, Katie comes face-to-face with a choice. Will she follow her well-laid plans to marry Jack? Or will she fall for the man she swore to despise forever? (back cover)
This novel is the first in a new series called Winds of Change. This first book continues the story of the much loved Patrick and Marcy O’Connor family first introduced to us in The Daughters of Boston series by Julie Lessman. A Hope Undaunted is based on the romantic love life of the youngest daughter, Katie, but there are fairly frequent visits into the storyline by the other sisters and their husbands (you may recall characters such as Faith, Charity, Lizzie, Collin, Mitch and Brady.)
I really quite enjoyed A Hope Undaunted by Julie Lessman. I found the characters to be fairly three dimensional and enjoyed the interaction between the two main characters, Katie and Luke, although at times I was surprised by Katie’s sudden abrupt turns. The O’Connor family is true to form in their larger-than-life sort of Irish personalities and entertaining as always.
The story line revolves around Katie who is caught between two men whom she is attracted to for different reasons which is one of the oldest romantic story lines in fiction and cinema as well. There is also a bit of mystery as to why Luke is so drawn to another female character in the novel. There are a couple of subplots, if you will, that are interesting in their own respect. One deals with a little orphan girl whom Luke has befriended as well as another woman whom Luke is helping for somewhat unknown reasons for most of the story.
This book seems to have it all – endearing characters, engaging love story, strong minor story lines and even a touch of mystery. If you haven’t met the O’Connor family – get started here and then you will want to go back to where it all started in the Daughters of Boston series.

Hey Tracey, love your review. Luke’s relationship is a little clearer, I think, if you’ve read the prior books and have a better understanding of his background. Otherwise, it might be a bit confusing, I guess. Still, I’m glad you liked it. Julie’s novels never disappoint.
