Comes A Horseman was definitely in the thriller category! It was an edge-of-your-seat, don’t turn off the light at night kind of novel. It depicted pure evil in a very powerful way.
I was both riveted and horrified especially at the beginning of the novel. I kept looking at the cover wondering “Is this really a Christian novel?” as the murder scenes were frighteningly intense and very gory. It seemed to take the Christian thriller to the next level. The jury is still out as to whether this is a Christian novel vs a novel with Christian themes. I think because it is number 87 on the secular thriller list that it is more a secular novel dealing with end times themes. When was the last time a “Christian” novel made it onto a secular best seller list? But more than just the list, was the fact that the novel depicted the violence and death scenes in a graphically gory manner. I’m not sure that is what I want to read when I pick up a Christian thriller.
With that being said, this was an excellent novel. The story line kept you interested hook, line and sinker. The characterization was solid and believable and the relationship between the characters was realistic. The theme of the loss of a loved one was integral to the story line and brought a realism to the story that may have been missing in all the “thrilling” parts. Not having been part of the law enforcement culture, the chasing down of such an evil person who is also after me has a token of disbelief about it, but I think the author successfully convinces the reader that this is really happening to these two characters.
The budding love connection between the two main characters also cements their relationship and adds a more personal element to the story line. A softer side to the grisly details, if you will.
Wow. As I think over all the different parts in my mind, I am realizing how much I really did enjoy this novel. If you are into thrillers, this is definitely a novel you don’t want to miss! I’m urging my husband to pick it up and read it now, too!
If you are a more delicate Christian reader who enjoys the gentle love stories accompanied with a box of kleenex and a cup of tea, then this novel is probably not for you.
Bravo, Robert Liparulo! I look forward to reading the next novel, tentatively titled DeathStrand.
