If any novel has opened my eyes to the needs and risks in
my marriage, this is the one. Karen Kingsbury broke my heart
with her gut-wrenchingly true portrayal of a man and woman
who unintentionally drift apart from each other and from the
Lord while appearing even to themselves to be "doing
fine." John and Abby Reynolds have the most envied marriage
within their circle and their church, yet the busyness of
raising a family and maintaining a certain standard of living
ever-so-subtly creep in like a wedge and tear them apart.
Their dreams, past victories, and wonderful children are not
enough to patch up the wounds they have allowed to fester,
and they face the inevitable question: is it worth even trying
anymore? Kingsbury hits the heart of a woman's needs and perceptions,
and of a man's God-given needs and purposes, and shows how
the Enemy tries to destroy what God has brought together.
Misunderstandings, assumptions, accusations, and facades replace
the love and communication they once enjoyed. It frightened
me to see some of the same tendencies in my own marriage,
but has become a warning signal to not let those things continue.
Every married couple should read this; it's an excellent counseling
book written as a novel.
