This novel was my first experience with Christian sci-fi, and I have mixed feelings about the genre itself. However, I enjoyed the story of Hesper, an Alula (angel-like being) who in spite of her self-percieved fearfulness, is very brave. She makes friends with Tristan, a Boytaur (half-man, half-horse) disliked by all others because of his differences. When Hesper is Sent to the human plane to improve the tragic state of the earth, Tristan is determined to find her and bring back her memories (lost in the Sending process). The development of their friendship and Hesper's character kept my interest in the novel - even while the intrigue of traveling between planes of existence to save the world was lost on me. Miller has written well from the perspective of a young girl. There is some reference to God from the humans in the story, but I can't see any clear parallels or allegories that make this a truly Christian book. Still, it's an enjoyable story.
