As I wait for further books in the O'Malley
series, I'm very interested in Henderson's Uncommon Heroes
series as well. Written about the lives of those whose lives
are on the line for our protection on an international scale,
the Uncommon Heroes books bring news stories home to our hearts
by exploring the relationships and emotions of the people
who risk their lives for peace. In True Devotion I've learned
much about the tactics and challenges of Navy SEAL operations
due to Dee Henderson's great research and talent in portraying
a realistic picture of them.
Three years after having lost her Navy SEAL husband in a "training
accident," lifeguard Kelly Jacobs is facing death herself
as she rescues a teen from the Pacific tidewaters near San
Diego. While she struggles to stay alive and reestablish her
dwindling faith in God, her dead husband's commanding officer
and best friend Joe Baker is in turn searching for her. As
he finds and rescues her, Kelly blurts out her hidden feelings
for him, and their friendship is suddenly strained by this
new twist. This relationship is also challenged by the admiring
father of the teen Kelly saved, who pursues her with deep
interest. And when Kelly and Joe are thrown into danger as
her husband's killer comes after her, they are forced to truly
rely on God to be their rescuer.
The novel is action-filled and gripping, with a nice flavor
of romance woven throughout.

Henderson's second novel in the Uncommon Heroes series follows
the terrific realism and excitement of the first. (By the
way, you don't have to read them in order; they aren't significantly
connected by plot or characters.) Built on the lives of heroes
in the US Air Force, this novel takes the reader behind enemy
lines and into the characters' hearts. Lieutenant Grace Yates,
one of the first women to fly fighter jets over Iraq for the
Navy, loves her career and is the best at what she does. A
pararescueman, Air Force Major Bruce Stanton has the task
of recovering the pilots brought down in enemy territory.
He is also in pursuit of Lieutenant Yates. While their jobs
separate them for months at a time, they find that writing
letters to one another is a wonderful way to pour out their
hearts in the midst of their daily stresses in the international
conflict. The unthinkable happens, and suddenly Grace's life
depends on Bruce's skill and speed to get her home alive.
This novel brings home the reality of what brave men and women
do to protect the lives of others, and the toll their sacrifices
take on their lives and their families. Reading this gave
me heightened respect and insight into how to pray for those
who serve our countries.
