Google has launched its massive eBookstore, Google eBooks, with more than 3 million books today and many of them are free.
Rather than buying books that can only be read by a single software platform (i.e. books bought from the Kindle Store can only be read on Kindle apps), Google allows you to buy books and read them on any device with a web browser.
Independent booksellers will be able to advertise and sell Google eBooks via their own venues – something they haven’ been able to do in the past.
Not only will you be able to read Google eBooks on on your Android, iPhone, or iPad, but your books will automatically sync across devices, so if you begin reading with one device in the morning, you’ll be able to continue with another in the afternoon.
Nearly 4,000 publishers have signed up with Google eBooks including all of the major publishers.
Time will only tell how this will shake up the eBook industry.
