A Passion Most Pure
by Julie Nessman
I loved this book!! This is definitely my book of the year! It didn't have any earth shattering revelations, poignant images or edge-of-your-seat suspense, but it was captivating right from the beginning. I didn't want to put it down. It had me laughing, crying, giggling and turning page after page late into the night. Historical fiction is definitely my most favourite type of fiction and this hit me in the right spot. It is also a hefty 477 pages long so you are definitely getting your money's worth from this author! I can't wait to read the next in the series!
Set in the early 1900's during World War 1, it has a cast of characters each with their own full-bodied appeal. Even characters introduced later in the book are well-developed and memorable. Being the oldest sister of four younger girls, I could especially relate to Faith's feelings towards her more beautiful younger sister. It definitely struck a chord with me.
Before I say too much, here is the book description from the back cover:
She Found The Love Of Her Live.
Unfortunately, He Loves Her Sister.
As World War I rages across the Atlantic in 1916, a smaller war is brewing in Boston. Faith O'Conner finds herself drawn to an Irish rogue who is anything but right for her. Collin McGuire is brash, cocky, and from the wrong side of the tracks, not to mention forbidden by her father. And then there's the small matter that he is secretly courting her younger sister. But when Collin's affections shift, it threatens to tear her proper Boston family apart.
Book 1 of The Daughters of Boston series, A Passion Most Pure will carry your heart from the sophisticated streets of Boston to the green hills of Ireland as men go off to war and women long for their return. Full of passion, romance, rivalry, and betrayal, it will captivate you from the first page. (c) A Passion Most Pure, 2008 .
Warning! Do not read further if you haven't read the book yet!
There was one little problem that bothered me about the book and it was on the second last page. How could Mitch fall in love with Charity?!! If he really loved Faith for who she was, her morals and faith in God too, then how could he settle for Charity who had none of those things?! That was the only part of the book that seemed too contrived. I would have been just as happy to know that Charity was left with no-one until she shows some real change and maturity - perhaps in book two?
