I enjoyed this book by Al and Joanna Lacy although the beginning was slow reading. Once you sludge through the tragedy and background information and get into the real story line of the book, it is quite enjoyable. I was tempted to put it down at first but am glad I continued on to the end. It is a sweet love story between a man, who has lost his wife and child during childbirth and sends for a mail order bride, and a woman. who has lost her husband to a violent beating and has her small daughter taken from her by her husband's parents. Seeing her only answer to getting her daughter back by marrying a "wealthy" miner out west and saving enough money to take her in-laws to court and get her daughter back, she answers an advertisement in the paper for a mail order bride. Thus begins the love story in the latter part of the book between a miner with a young son and a destitute (but beautiful, of course) woman on a mission to get her daughter back. One important element that is woven throughout the entire book is God's redemptive love and the ability to change hate into forgiveness. I enjoyed this book and looked forward to reading the next in the Mail Order Bride Series.

A Time to Love continues the western history of Mail Order Brides. Linda, jilted at the altar by her fiancee who has run off with her sister, decides to answer an advertisement for a mail order bride sent by Blake Barrett. This new trip outwest where no-one knows her and her pitiful story gives Linda new hope. However, he new husband-to-be is not what she expected. It seems that he isn't the Christian he proclaimed to be and she wonders what God has in store for her. Will her season for love eventually come around? I loved this love story much more than the first. It was a mystery within a love story and I was caught up in it. I encourage anyone who loves a tender love story set in the west to read this book! I'm sure you'll be hooked! A very good read!

The Tender Flame tells of a tragic love story with love gained and then quickly lost as Lieutenant Grant Smith is killed in the Mexican-American war. Lydia Reynolds heart is broken over the loss of her fiancee. Sadly, Lydia marries and begins a new life. Tragically, Grant has mysteriously survived and returns to find Lydia married and moved away. Years later, Grant's daughter, Jessica, accepts a marriage proposal from a young pastor living in the west. Through Jessica, Grant and Lydia meet once again. Has the tender flame burned all these years? Will they both be free to love one another? This was a tragic love story that had me sobbing in the early part of the book. I was pleased with the tender love story that was shaped throughout the book through the individual lives and events of each character before finally meeting one another again. I enjoyed this book and would heartedly recommend it to others to read! A great read!
