I love Linda Chaikin's books! The Arabian Winds is my all-time favourite exotic romance novel! The passion and chemistry between two characters was never done as well as between Alison and Captain Bret in that series. Ah well. Back to this latest novel by Linda.

This novel plots the mystery of a young woman named Eva Varley who believes that she has always been the beloved daughter of two Missionaries martyred when she was an infant. However, she slowly discovers that this is not the case and that the dear Aunt and Uncle who have raised her have been keeping secrets of their own. When she encounters Sir Rogan Chantry up-close-and-personal, she discovers that he has a few mysteries of his own. The mystery of the infamous Kimberly Black Diamond draws them together several times in the novel. Romance blossoms between these two occasionally and the author pits the traditional marriage for money and influence against the marriage for love theme quite common of novels set during this time period of the eighteen hundreds amongst the wealthy and elite.

This story was great. It was full of mystery, intrigue, romance, and danger. I was disappointed in what I perceived as lack of chemistry between the two main characters. But what can possibly match her earlier novels (as I went on about above.) I felt that their romance needed more development and details to make it work really well. However, it was acceptable.

The plot is what grabs you in and keeps you reading until you devour the book. I must say that I found it somewhat predictable in a few places but I credit that to my exhaustive expertise at this type of romance novel. All laughter aside, Linda would have to come up with something quite off the wall to surprise me and the fact that the novel was somewhat predictable was sort of comforting in that it was satisfying to see it work out as it did.

Would I pick up the next in this series? Definitely! Linda Chaikin is always a must read!
