California Historical Series #1
Ruth Caldwell has always tried to live up to her mother’s expectations of what a lady should be…often with less than impressive results. But when she’s forced to journey west to meet the father she’s never seen, Ruth hopes that this might be the place she’ll finally fit in. But her arrival brings about more mayhem than even Ruth is used to. She soon meets Josh McCain, the son of her father’s business partner, but discovers some startling news: Her father passed away years ago. And though Josh urges Ruth to claim her inheritance, he grows suspicious of something more sinister at hand when her “accidents” seem to go beyond Ruth’s normal bumbling ways and leave her very life in danger.
Letter Perfect was a delight to read. It’s characters left me believing I had gained new friends. A couple of days after I had finished the book and set it aside, I caught myself longing to read more and meet my friends again. That, to me, is a true testament to the worthiness of the book.
I really enjoyed the depiction of the characters as less than perfect – especially the main character, Ruth. She was quite humorous and real. I was a bit disappointed when many of her “mishaps” turned out to be nefarious dealings of the antagonist. I was a bit disappointed with the “perfection” of the rancher’s daughter, Laney, and would have liked to have seen some more realness from her.
The plot was not fast paced or jam packed with events, but it was definitely engaging and transported me from the regularity of everyday existence to someplace else for a while. There was enough to keep me wondering who it was that was up to no good and I was surprised about who it was and the rationale for his/her actions. I would definitely suggest you pick up a copy of this book and get swept away from the ordinary.
