Not a Trace

When I was in grade school
I loved to read Nancy Drew mysteries. The locations were so
interesting, Nancy was so together, and the good guys (okay,
girls mostly, except when they had to call in the muscle of
their football playing boyfriends) always won. My parents
approved of me reading them, as let’s face it –
Nancy was a pretty wholesome girl. (Did she ever even kiss
Ned Nickerson ?)
Nowadays I can’t see many girls
past the age of 10 even looking twice at a Nancy Drew mystery.
But I can see them being totally absorbed by Not A Trace by
the award winning author Norah McClintock. The setting is
modern, located in cottage-country Ontario. The heroine, Chloe,
is a modern (though just as wholesome) girl. The author has
managed to weave in modern issues such as native land rights
claims without making the book too heavy. And the mystery
is great! With a fast pace and lots of twists and turns to
keep the reader guessing, it was a pleasure to read “Not
a Trace”. I would recommend you pass this book on to
the female teenager in your life.
Note that while this book is the sixth
in the “Chloe and Levesque” series, it is the
first one I have read and does not require reading any of
the previous novels. (Though I am now going to look for the
earlier books to read and review !).
