The English Garden Series #1
The Proposal is the first in The English Garden series by Lori Wick. Set in early 1800 England, this novel contains all the charm of the 19th Century in it. Based on the popular “guardian and the nanny” love story, this novel contains delightful characters, a gentle romance, and a strong Biblical base.
When a relative dies, William Jennings becomes the guardian of three young children. Knowing nothing about children, and even less in particular about little girls, Jennings blunders along on the parenting journey choosing to separate the three children and teach the two boys about “manly things” while a mean governess takes charge of the youngest, a girl. Calling upon his sister for assistance, Jennings is introduced to a young woman, Marianne, who befriends the children. As he watches Marianne interact with and come to care for the children, Jennings himself is drawn to her delightful spirit. However, everything is not smooth as Marianne fears that Jennings’ feelings for her are simply as a mother for his children. Besides that issue, Jennings is not a Christian and Marianne cannot consent to marry a non-christian no matter what. Will Jennings come to see Marianne for the real woman she is and not just as a mother for his children and will he be drawn to her faith and to her God?
The characters in this novel are absolutely delightful! The children are spunky and adorable and have considerable time devoted to them in the story which is often rare in Christian adult fiction and I find this a refreshing. The traditional English “nanny” and an English gentleman have been the stuff of many a successful movie and novel, and this one is no exception. This novel has all the delights of a well-written, sensitive, and beautiful English novel and is as refreshing as a walk through a fragrant English garden!
The plot is well developed, smooth moving, and contains a lot of romantic suspense.
All I can say is that this novel is simply delightful and I heartily recommend it to all! I can’t wait to read the second in the series, The Rescue.
