Carina DiGratia leaves the security of her family and friends to flee the man whom she has always intended to marry. After finding her love in the arms of her own sister, Carina finds she must leave at once. She decides to head west, into the mountains of Colorado. Secretly, she hopes her Italian love will seek her out in the west and declare his undying love for her, but she is to be disapointed in many ways. Her love does not come searching for her, she loses almost all of her belongings over the side of a cliff during her travels, finds her home to be occupied by dispicable vagrants, and the employment prospects in the rough and dirty mining town to be negligable. Will Carina reach deep within herself and strengthen her faith in God during all her trials and tribulations she experiences in Crystal, Colorado? What will become of her relationship with the irritating, but handsome man who seems to bail her out of trouble time and time again? When she finds herself in true danger, will he be there in time to rescue her once again?
This novel is full of love and intrigue as it realistically portrays life in a frontier mining town where the men are callous and dirty, and the women scarce and most of whom are employed in somewhat dubious professions. I enjoyed it very much, especially the Italian cultural flavour portrayed through the main character, Carina DeGratia. It lends a cultural view of other immigrants not normally portrayed in early west novels. I also enjoyed the portrayal of strong women making a living in the wild west in the best manner they could. I couldn’t wait to read the sequel to this novel, “Sweet Boundless.”
